Dear Patient,

Welcome to our September Newsletter.  There is plenty of summer left and I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather.   This month we are going to get right to the point.

First, I need you to do something before reading further.

Ready?

Numbers Don't Lie

Start by finding a flexible tape measure.  If you don't have one, a piece of string will do.  If using string, you'll need some kind of measuring stick or approximation.  Set?

Apple MeasureTake the tape measure, string or any reasonable facsimile and place it around your waist at the point of your navel.  Go!

Note the measurement.  No gender bias intended here but:

If you are female and the measurement is over 35 inches, skip the next sentence and read on.

If you are male and the measurement is over 40 inches read on.

If neither of the above applies, then somebody you care about has a waist measurement over 35" if female and 40" if male - so read on anyway.

If you have a waist measurement in excess of the above measurements, you are most likely overweight and chances are almost certain that you are insulin resistant.  The two go hand in hand.

Why is that important you ask?  Because the two most common risk factors associated with what is known as Metabolic Syndrome (AKA Syndrome X) are excess weight and insulin resistance.

What exactly is Metabolic Syndrome and why is It So Important?

The commonly accepted cluster of conditions that comprise Metabolic Syndrome serve as a precursor to heart disease, stroke and diabetes - the big three we want to avoid at all costs.  So say the NIH, American Heart Association and virtually everyone else on the planet.

The Metabolic Syndrome Snapshot - (not such a pretty picture)

Overweight Risks

*Or if presently on medical treatment to lower these numbers

Insulin Resistance is the Kingpin Here

The role of insulin is to facilitate getting blood sugar into the cells to provide us with energy.  With the excess of sugar and simple carbohydrates (both really sugar) so prevalent in today's diet, the pancreas is hard pressed to produce enough insulin to assimilate the overwhelming load.  And, after a while, the cells just simply can't absorb the excess sugar and shut down - becoming Insulin Resistant.

Road Block

Think:  "I Hear You Knockin' but You Can't Come In"

With the pancreas pumping out more insulin with every high carb meal and nowhere for it to go, the body must clear the sugar and sends it off to the liver where it is converted to fat and stored for later use - you guessed it - around the waistline.

And, with little blood sugar flowing into the cells to be used as energy, the effect is that getting any exercise at all seems like the most arduous chore in the world.

Sound Familiar?  "I'm so tired; I just don't have the energy to exercise."

Following me here?

Too much sugar → Too much insulin → Insulin Resistance → Excess Fat Storage & No energy to do anything about it

The Perfect Storm leading to second stage risk factors for Metabolic Syndrome:

  • Increased Blood Pressure
  • Increased Triglycerides
  • Low HDL

By this time, we are off to the races and are on our way to the big three mentioned above - heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

(By the way, the new USDA Food Plate calls for 50% carbohydrates in our daily diets.  Huh? Doesn't seem to make sense, does it?)

Heard Enough?  Enough to make the necessary lifestyle changes to turn this ship around?  If yes, please read on.

A Return to a Traditional Diet is the Long Term Solution

Nutrition

The traditional diet principles we espouse at Dr. Dan's are based on the work of Dr. Weston A. Price, a nutrition researcher who brought to light the tremendous health benefits that can be derived

from adhering to a traditional diet.  You have heard me speak about this diet in virtually every newsletter we publish.

At Dr. Dan's we couple health education to guide people in transitioning to a traditional diet with Nutrition Response Therapy, our method of identifying existing nutritonal deficiences and quickly resolving these deficiences with whole foods nutrition supplementation.  Our patients have seen tremendous results when these two healing components are used concurrently.  Each builds on and accelerates the healing properties of the other.

But, what if a patient has a lot of weight to lose?

A traditional diet will work in the long term; however it will not produce rapid weight loss results in the near term.  Numerous studies show that the sooner one's weight begins to drop, the sooner the risk factors drop accordingly.

To address this, we have developed a weight loss program for our patients to help them see and feel the benefit of weight loss faster than ever before.  We call it the Dynamic Weight Loss Program. Remember back to that waist measurement?  Well, if yours is above the goal measurement noted above; we want you to join in.

Here's how it works:

Whole Foods Nutrition Program to Debut at the Burbank YMCA in Reading, MA

YMCAWe are taking our four session Whole Foods Nutrition Program on the road starting in September as we launch the same program we offer at Dr. Dan's at the Burbank YMCA in Reading MA.

Ms. Olga Arnold, Group Exercise Coordinator at the Burbank YMCA, was instrumental in adding this program to the wide array of programs being offered this fall.  A second program is already in the works for October.  According to Ms. Arnold:

"I am very excited to have the opportunity to offer the Whole Foods Nutrition Program to our members and staff at the Burbank YMCA in Reading, MA.   I really feel that Sara has a wealth of knowledge as well as talent to present the information in a very clear and easy to understand format.  This is a one of a kind program that enabled me, after taking the 4 week class, to easily and completely transition my family's nutrition and health in the right direction.

I am very eager and excited for our members and friends at the Burbank YMCA to learn what proper nutrition can do for their total well being. Our members spend many hours working out in fitness classes and other machines.  Exercise is one component of well being, but I feel that by offering them the knowledge of Whole Foods Nutrition we will enable them to complete the puzzle to better total health

Thank you to Dr. Dan and Sara for coming to Reading and educating our friends at the Burbank YMCA."

We at Dr. Dan's are tremendously excited to be bringing this course to the Burbank YMCA. Over time, we plan on offering more of our nutrition programs in a variety of different venues.  If your organization, group or employer has an interest in offering on-site health and nutrition programs, please let us know and we will be happy to arrange it.

We are also happy to talk with your group about various health and wellness issues.  Just give us a call to discuss your group's needs.

Natural Healing With Nutrition Response Therapy Talk by Dr. Dan Monday, September 19th from 6:30 - 7:30 pm

Nutrition Response Testing is a non-invasive system that analyzes the body to determine the underlying causes of ill health.  When these causes are corrected through safe, natural nutritional means, the body can repair itself to attain and maintain more optimal health.

Nutrition Response Testing is very precise and scientific.  It enables our bodies to communicate exactly what is going on internally to us.  Think of it as a means of giving "voice" to your body to let you know what it needs to be healthy.

This talk by Dr. Dan will focus on providing a thorough explanation of how Nutrition Response Testing is highly effective in dealing with a wide variety of subjects such as cardiovascular disease, digestive issues, migraines, osteoporosis and other health concerns.

Anyone interested in learning more about Dr. Dan's Natural Healing Center and understanding how the natural healing process can dramatically improve their health will want to attend this talk.

Patients who have signed up for the Level I Natural Healing Program at Dr. Dan's are required to attend at least one NRT Talk and are strongly encouraged to bring friends and family members along to the talk.

When friends and family members become knowledgeable about NRT and provide a strong support base to patients, they typically experience even greater results with their natural healing program.

We look forward to seeing you at this Natural Healing with Nutrition Response Therapy Talk with Dr. Dan.  Please call us at 978.462.0023 or e-mail us at info@drdansnaturalhealing.com to register.  There is no charge for this talk.
