Join us on Monday, March 14th from 7-8 pm for our Reversing Coronary Artery Disease Talk by Dr. Dan.
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
CAD is a degenerative condition that is the leading cause of death in men and women in the US. It accounts for more deaths than all other diseases combined. 3,000 people died of CAD in 1930, however now greater than 1,000,000 people die annually. Billions of dollars have been spent to manage it, yet the prevalence of heart disease continues to rise.
Arteriosclerosis is defined as deposits of fatty, fibrous plaques which narrow the blood vessels. This results in decrease oxygen and nutrients to tissue. In coronary artery disease this tissue is heart muscle.
Angina, unstable angina, and myocardial infarction (MI) are worsening stages of arteriosclerosis. Common causes are:
- Nutritional deficiencies affecting arterial endothelium (vessel walls) and arterial musculature.
- Inflammation resulting in formation of protective plaques
- High blood sugar (diabetes), causing inflammation and plaques
- High homocysteine levels
- Prolonged stress, resulting in imbalance of adrenal hormones
- Oxidation of LDLs
- Ingestion of trans fats and rancid fats (most oil supplements are rancid)
- Mega-doses of synthetic Vitamin C which depletes copper and weakens large blood vessels
- Excessive intake of polyunsaturated fats leading to free radical damage of cholesterol, inflammation, and plaques
- Hypertension
- Smoking
- Infection
- Conventional hormone replacement therapy or birth control pills
- Intake of Synthetic Vitamin E
Symptoms of CAD in men present as chest pain, chest pressure, squeezing, numbness in arms, neck, shoulder, or jaw, irregular heart rhythm, shortness of breath, nausea, fatigue, restlessness, anxiety, sense of doom, faintness, disorientation, or excessive sweating.
For women, typical symptoms include unusual fatigue, shortness of breath, sleep disturbance, nausea, indigestion, dizziness, chest, back, or neck discomfort, upper abdominal pressure, anxiety, and cold sweats.
Both men and women can have silent heart attacks, meaning there are no obvious signs or symptoms. This is more common in elderly women and in people with diabetes. Conditions that mimic heart attacks include indigestion, gas, heartburn/reflux, musculoskeletal pain, and shingles. With symptoms, it is critical to go immediately to an emergency room. Half of all deaths occur within 3 to 4 hours of the onset of symptoms.
The rise of CAD parallels the introduction and practice of dietary changes that involve refined grains and hydrogenated oils. With the loss of nutrients and the addition of toxins and trans fats in our food, degenerative disease ensues.
Click here to read on about the effects of CAD and Dr. Dan's approach to correcting this condition.

Dr. Dan's Top Ten Power Foods What you eat makes all the difference in the world. But some foods just stand apart as being what we call "Power Foods". Below is a list of foods that have earned the distinction of being one of Dr. Dan's Top Ten Power Foods. We invite you to take this challenge: Incorporate one of these Power Foods into your nutrition program each week for the next ten weeks and you will be well on your way to great nutrition! Drumroll, please . . . - Coconut Oil - virgin, organic, unrefined and cold-pressed oil. Coconut oil is great for cooking all kinds of food as it adds delicious flavor and has a high burn point. Coconut oil is a healthy addition to smoothies, and also can be used on the skin as moisturizer. This oil gives immediate energy, raises body heat, protects the gut and keeps insulin levels from rising. Try Green Pasture brand*
- Butter -Pastured dairy cows yield butterfat loaded with Vitamins A & D, iodine and other essential nutrients. Not only does butter taste delicious, it's a good fat for our heart, brain, hormones and cells. Try Kerry Gold, Anchor brand.**
- Raw Milk - is a living food rich in colloidal minerals, sugars and fats with enzymes necessary for digestion and absorption, beneficial bacteria and lactic acid. Unheated butterfat prevents arthritic stiffness, assists with eczema and allergies. Pasteurized milk is sadly deficient in these nutrients. Brookford Farm, Rollinsford, NH has a distribution point in Exeter for their products. www.brookfordfarm.com.
- Cod Liver Oil - Supplies essential fatty acids, plus Vitamins A & D, strengthens the immune system, nervous system and hormonal reactions. Try Green Pasture brand*
- Sea Salt - Unrefined, high quality sea salt yields over 80 minerals crucial for enzymatic reactions requiring trace minerals in the body and supports the adrenal glands. Enhances flavors in food. Try Celtic Sea Salt brand.*
- Bone Broth - Excellent nutrition for bone health supplying most of the necessary minerals. Bone broth is very warming for the body in cool to cold weather. Choose pasture raised chicken bones (necks & feet, too!), beef or veal bones and follow recipes in Nourishing Traditions.***
- Raw Honey - Is unpasteurized, meaning that it's full of the natural enzymes, vitamins and nutrients, straight from the extractor of the concentrated nectar flowers. Use raw honey to replace refined sugars in the diet. *
- Apple Cider Vinegar - Aids in digestion of proteins, maintains a healthy gut, helps with allergies and asthma as well as osteoarthritis and bone spurs. Try Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar*
- Nutritional Yeast - Replaces B vitamins except B12. Needed especially if there is a dietary history of eating refined sugar and flour that depletes the body of these vitamins. Try Radiant Life Nutritional Yeast*
- Lacto Fermented Foods - Yogurt, kombucha, sauerkraut, kefir- tremendous foods for repairing and maintaining gut health, absorbing nutrients and keeping a healthy immune system. Try Real Pickles brand fermented vegetables*

Yoga for Stress Reduction and Self Care Talk by Chris Morton, RYT, Thursday, March 10th from 7-8pm
Self Care and Yoga by Chris Morton, RYT
Yoga is the practice of witnessing what is happening in the present moment. Yoga helps us strengthen our ability to stay active in our own care and that care begins when we meet ourselves with compassion exactly as we are. Stress is an inevitable part of all our lives however we can learn to deal with it in ways that lessen its impact on our body and mind.

When we become overwhelmed with life's challenges, the mind becomes agitated, our energy depleted and our whole body/mind system is impacted. The connection between stress and heart issues has been documented time and time again.
Yoga provides approaches to stress management and self care that help decrease the physiological, emotional and behavioral effects of stress. For instance, if we are practicing yoga poses on the mat, we witness the movements, the sensations, the thoughts and the feelings that accompany the experience. If we are making dietary changes we stay aware of the effect it has on our digestion and energy levels. It all falls into the category of the practice of self observation without judgment.
Yoga can also be taken off the mat when we take time to notice the content and quality of our everyday thinking. I've heard it said that we think somewhere around 61,000 thoughts each day so there are lots of opportunities to investigate thought patterns and eating patterns. This too is done through the practice of observing with compassion and understanding.
Click here to learn more about the beneficial effects of yoga.
If you would like to explore more fully how yoga can bring balance on and off the mat, come to a session with Chris Morton RYT on March 10th from 7-8 pm at Dr. Dan's. Please e-mail us at info@drdansnaturalhealing.com or call us at 978.462.0023 to register.

Join us on Monday, March 28th from 7-8 pm for Balancing your Thyroid Talk by Dr. Dan
Thyroid Disease
The thyroid gland, located at the base of the neck, is the body's workhorse. It controls basal metabolism - the rate at which the body produces energy from food - and has a primary effect on overall energy levels. It regulates digestion, oxygen consumption, body temperature and growth rate and brain development in children. It also has a profound effect on mood, emotion, and cognition.
Additionally, when it contains enough iodine, the thyroid assists the immune system as it acts as an antimicrobial/antiseptic in cleansing all of the body's blood that passes through the thyroid every 17 minutes. Virtually all cells in the body have receptors for thyroid hormones.
In the U.S., 13 million people have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism (low thyroid activity) but closer to 50 million people exhibit symptoms of thyroid disease. Common symptoms include fatigue, muscle aches, joint pains, lethargy, memory loss, loss of concentration and mental sluggishness.
People with thyroid disease also exhibit symptoms of depression, cold extremities or a deep sense of cold, weight gain, menstrual irregularities, increased colds and flu, eczema, acne, and dry skin. Also, changes in perspiration, hoarse voice, fullness in neck (goiter), puffy eyelids, hair loss, dry, coarse hair, and carbohydrate/sweet cravings.
Whew! Are you beginning to understand why a well-functioning thyroid is of paramount importance to your health? So, what causes hypothyroidism?
The majority of people with thyroid disease have functional hypothyroidism due to:
- Weakened adrenal glands from prolonged stress,
- Estrogen dominance due to an estrogen/progesterone imbalance in women or estrogen/testosterone imbalance in men, and
- Nutritional deficiencies.

Nutrition Response Therapy is a non-invasive system that analyzes the body to determine the underlying causes of ill health. When these causes are corrected through safe, natural nutritional means, the body can repair itself to attain and maintain more optimal health.

These talks by Dr. Dan will focus on providing a thorough explanation of how Natural Healing with Nutrition Response Therapy is highly effective in dealling with a wide variety of issues such as cardiovascular disease, digestive issues, migraines, osteoporosis and other health concerns.

New! Health Snippets Column
There's something new with the Newsletter this month - a Health Snippets section. Health Snippets are our way of communicating facts about health related topics in a concise way that you can easily implement into your own health program. Consider Health Snippets as just another piece of the puzzle that will help you on your way toward improved health. Our first Health Snippet is devoted to Reading Labels: Less is More. We hope you enjoy it!
Reading Labels: Less is More
As a general rule of thumb, avoid foods that even have a label. Generally, healthier choices are foods that don't have a label to begin with, such as eggs, vegetables, fruits, meats, raw milk, nuts, seeds and legumes. However, when there is a nutrition label, less is more.
Food with a nutrition label and an ingredient list goes through some processing. Processing a food takes it further from its original state, usually meaning that we get fewer nutrients from that food. Choose nutrient dense, whole foods whenever you can with five or less ingredients on the label.
Five ingredients or less - give it a try!

How Do We Measure Our Success at Dr. Dan's?
We are always striving to improve the level of service we provide to our patients at Dr. Dan's. I hope you are pleased with the health information we have provided you, our talks, Guest Speaker Series and the many positive changes we have made at Dr. Dan's over the past several months.
One thing always remains the same: The sole criterion we use to measure our success at Dr. Dan's is the success our patients achieve in restoring and maintaining their good health. We recognize you have many health care options and we truly appreciate the faith you have placed in us. We will continue to do everything we can to continue to earn your trust.
How Do we Measure Our Success at Dr. Dan's? Here's How.
"A little more than a year ago, I was extremely lethargic, my joints ached immensely and I had terrible headaches. My right knee had swollen to twice its size. After a very bright Physician Assistant decided to draw the fluid from my knee and have it tested, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Lyme disease.
I took high doses of antibiotics for almost four months. I had flu-like symptoms almost every day in addition to the other symptoms. I took myself off of the antibiotics and the flu symptoms subsided, but I still had the other symptoms and just getting through the day was difficult. My life consisted of sleep, work and home again to sleep.
The tests still came out positive with Lyme. I knew I needed to do something different, the drugs were making me sick and I was still sick with Lyme.
I had heard of Dr. Dan through a friend of mine and made my first appointment in April. I figured I had nothing to lose. My first appointment was "interesting" and I thought I'd give it a few months to see how things went.
After changing my supplements several times and changing my diet, I can now say that after only 9 months, I no longer have Lyme. My symptoms are completely gone. Thank you for giving me my life back!"
Dee
Thanks, Dee. We are ecstatic about your success!

From Dr. Dan's Kitchen - Homemade Vinaigrette
As the weather begins to warm, we think more about lighter meals and the appeal of a terrific healthy salad comes to mind. These homemade vinaigrette recipes are simple to make and healthier for you than store bought salad dressings. Many salad dressings contain high amounts of processed poly-unsaturated oils like corn oil, soybean oil, canola oil and vegetable oil - which you should avoid at all costs.
Honey Mustard Vinaigrette
¼ cup red wine vinegar
1 tsp raw honey
2 Tbsp Grey Poupon mustard
¼ lemon, juiced
Pinch of thyme, marjoram
½ tsp Celtic sea salt
¼ tsp cracked black pepper
¾ cup extra virgin olive oil
Mix ingredients with a whisk and slowly stir in olive oil. Shake well, store in the refrigerator up to one month. Use with new potatoes, roast chicken or strong flavored meats and vegetables.
Lemon Vinaigrette
2 Tbsp white wine vinegar
½ lemon, juiced
1 tsp Celtic sea salt
¼ tsp white pepper
1 shallot, minced
8 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Mix ingredients with a whisk and slowly stir in olive oil.
If you don't have all of the ingredients above, simply use an empty mustard container, add in olive oil and vinegar, give a good shake and you've got yourself a healthy salad dressing.

Healthy Steps Program
We recently announced our Healthy Steps Program to help our patients
incorporate a simple exercise pro-gram into their daily routines. With spring just around the corner, we invite you to "Put a Step in Your Spring". - well, many steps, actually.
Here's the scoop:
Have you ever stopped to wonder how many steps or miles your walk in a day? At Dr. Dan's, we are always talking about making positive changes in your health by taking it one step at a time. But, when it comes to getting more exercise, we are challenging you to "step it up" with a goal of reaching a daily average of 10,000 steps - that's just about 5 miles.
Think you can do it? We know you can! But you need to go slowly as you begin to increase your daily exercise using the Healthy Steps Program. You'll need a pedometer and a pair of athletic shoes. We have pedometers available for sale with the Dr. Dan's logo ($7.00) or you can purchase one online or at any store that carries sporting goods.
Here's how to begin:
- During Week -1, wear your pedometer for several "typical" days to determine your baseline steps. Write that number down.
- During Week 1, set as your goal to increase this number by 500 daily steps for the week. At the end of each day, record your daily steps. At the end of the week, add up your total steps, and divide by 7 to get your Daily Average Steps for Week 1.
- Continue increasing your goal by 500 steps each week and recording your Daily and Average Weekly Steps. You might even want to keep a running total of all the steps you have taken since beginning the Healthy Steps Program.
We think you'll be amazed at your progress if you stick with this program. And, you will be pleased to know that as you increase your exercise levels, your health program will begin to see even faster and better results.
We know it takes time and commitment to increase the amount of your daily exercise. We hope you will find our Healthy Steps Program an easy way to incorporate an effective exercise routine into your everyday life.
So, are you ready to put a few steps in your Spring? We hope so. See you around town!
