Dear Patient,
Happy New Year everyone! 2012 has arrived, bringing with it the possibility of positive change in all areas of our lives. If you are like most Americans, your list of New Year's Resolutions includes losing weight and getting in shape. That's exactly why we have scheduled two talks on weight loss and will begin our next Dynamic Weight Loss Program the first week in January. Additionally, we are kicking off the New Year with our very successful Whole Foods Nutrition Quick Start Program. I hope you will join us as we collectively slim down and get in the best shape of our lives. Dr. Dan If you are serious about losing weight, you'll want to understand how you gained that excess weight in the first place and the toll it is taking on your health. We originally included the following article in our September Newsletter and thought it fitting that we repeat it to inspire you to take action now! |

Numbers Don't Lie
Start by finding a flexible tape measure. If you don't have one, a piece of string will do. If using string, you'll need some kind of measuring stick or approximation. Set?
Take the tape measure, string or any reasonable facsimile and place it around your waist at the point of your navel. Go!
Note the measurement. No gender bias intended here but:
If you are female and the measurement is over 35 inches, skip the next sentence and read on.
If you are male and the measurement is over 40 inches read on.
If neither of the above applies, then somebody you care about has a waist measurement over 35" if female and 40" if male - so read on anyway.
If you have a waist measurement in excess of the above measurements, you are most likely overweight and chances are almost certain that you are insulin resistant. The two go hand in hand.
Why is that important you ask? Because the two most common risk factors associated with what is known as Metabolic Syndrome (AKA Syndrome X) are excess weight and insulin resistance.

- Come to one of our talks on Tuesday, January 3rd (see below) or Thursday, January 5th from 6:30 - 7:30 pm where Dr. Dan will explain the health and nutritional fundamentals that serve as the foundation for the program. If you like, you can sign up for the program after that evening's talk.
- Your weight loss program starts with your first appointment with Dr. Dan where he will conduct a Health Evaluation to determine any underlying nutritional deficiencies or weaknesses in your body's system.
- At your next appointment, Dr. Dan will communicate the results of your Health Evaluation and, with you, determine a course of action to reduce your weight and improve your overall health.

She will also provide you with a meal plan to follow over the coming 10 weeks of the program and explain our Healthy Steps Exercise Program.
- The next step in the program is for you to attend a 60-minute Dynamic Weight Loss Nutrition Class that explains in detail the nutrition program you will follow, start you off with some great tasting recipes and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
- We will also schedule you to attend a 3-hour Quick Start Nutrition Class with our Nutrition Counselor that will include a Whole Foods Nutrition Primer, some great taste testings and a 90-minute shopping excursion that will teach you where to find all the healthy foods you'll be eating during the program.

- At the end of the program, you will attend a second 60-minute Dynamic Weight Loss Nutrition Class that will teach you everything you need to know to transition back to a traditional whole foods eating plan. (Of course, if you wish to continue on with your weight loss program for an additional 12 weeks you are able to do that.)

No Joy in Soy
There is very little soy food that I consider safe for two reasons:
- Most soy products are GMO* produced, and
- Most soy is not fermented properly
*GMO stands for genetically modified organism, an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Today, the most controversial and most widely adopted application of GMO technology is patent-protected food crops such as soy and corn that are resistant to commercial herbicides or are able to produce pesticidal proteins from within the plant itself. (Monsanto owns patents on GMO food crops which will begin to expire in 2014.)
The soy products that I use and recommed are Non-GMO: Miso, natto, tamari and tempeh - and only in small amounts. Soy protein isolates are not considered GRAS (generally recognized as safe), yet they are found in multiple food products.
The following article, Soy Alert! appears on the Weston A. Price Foundation web site. Some of the information contained within may surprise - and even shock you.
Myths & Truths About Soy
Myth: Use of soy as a food dates back many thousands of years.
Truth: Soy was first used as a food during the late Chou dynasty (1134AD - 246BC), only after the Chinese learned to ferment soy beans to make foods like tempeh, natto and tamari.
Myth: Asians consume large amounts of soy foods.
Truth: Average consumption of soy foods in Japan and China is 10 grams (about 2 teaspoons) per day. Asians consume soy foods in small amounts as a condiment, and not as a replacement for animal foods.
